Perhaps you’ve heard of DHA and EPA, long chained omega-3 fatty acids that are the primary benefit found in fish oil supplements everywhere. Because it is uncertain how exactly omega-3s work determining exactly which of the two (DHA or EPA) is more beneficial can be difficult. Some studies state that DHA is more important for the function of the brain due to the extremely high levels of DHA found in the brain, which is significantly more than any other organ in the body. However, the importance of EPA is not considered lesser by any means by most. Studies done on patients suffering from depression, for instance, showed much more improvement when given supplements containing EPA as well as DHA together, then simply DHA.

It is also known now that our bodies do not create these valuable omega-3 nutrients, rather that we must take them in through supplements or various foods. Fish being the richest in these fats, people are unable to receive as much as we used to do to increased mercury in the water. Which is precisely the reason that fish oils are gaining as much popularity as they are, primarily pharmaceutical fish oils as they undergo the most purification standards. EPA and DHA rich fish oils with higher dosages being more popular because people don’t want to take multiple tablets daily. The brain, the joints, the digestive system, and even the heart all need Omega-3 nutrients for upkeep, EPA and DHA are easier to absorb for the body then the ALA nutrients found in flaxseed oils making fish oils the leading supplement in omega-3s.
